I have a love/hate relationship with this set . Even though it’s incredibly detailed there’s a lot to it that falls short of being awesome. That said, I couldn’t resist and got two of them so I could complete the main platform (and get two packed-in stormtrooper figures). In December of 2020 I received two of the Carbon Freeze sets and shared my initial reaction to it in this video:
My biggest complaint about the play set is the waste of space that the platform’s support legs are. Yes, you need the height to make the carbon block “elevator” work but that feature doesn’t work well & it wasn’t something I was interested in using. I wanted the main platform to be at “ground level” to save space. The second complaint is how Hasbro didn’t consider that collectors might want to add lighting to the play set. I’ve seen many people close in underneath the stairs and main platform using foam board or other material in order to keep any added-on lighting focused upward; and it looks great but I would have preferred that Hasbro either made lights part of the play set or at least consider that people would want to add lighting. For example, the easiest way to brighten things up is to put any type of LED string or ribbon lighting under the main platform. The problem is that there isn’t any way to run powered lights underneath without making the platform tilted. I ended up cutting a small notch in two different spots so I could run lights and then run the power cord from them without unbalancing the set. A couple of pre-made access spots would have been nice.
When I decided to move the set from the bookcase I first set it up in to a wide shelf I also decided to light the stairs as well as the main platform and I also cut down some of the support legs.
I cut some of the longer legs to match the shorter. Super easy to cut through with a hacksaw. The cut height is a little short (I cut at the thicker part) so I’ve glued some black washers to the bottom. They turned out nice and I’ll keep the extra long legs as greeblies for other projects.
So far…so good. I’ll keep the extra long legs for greeblies in other projects
Today’s attempt is brought to by Gorilla Glue duct tape – so much duct tape. I wanted to use remote controlled, powered LED strip lights so I can turn it on and off like a lamp. It looks so great lit up that I wanted something quick (instead of battery operated lights).
Hasbro really could have made this more user friendly, knowing people would want to light it up. I cut two notches in the main base to pass the light strip through. The different sections should be able to snap together too. Makes it really tough to flip it over to work underneath.
The photo below is what one strip of lights looks like running from one platform, down the stairs and into half of the main platform. I repeated the steps for the right side of the play set. After setting it up on the shelf I ran the USB cables that power the lights to an extension cord. When I walk in the room I just grab the remote and turn it on.
It’s basically a pain in the ass but it does look great once it’s all lit up and displayed. I added some parts from the Power of the Jedi Carbon Freeze as well. As long as the duct tape holds it should be ok. It’s up out of the way which was important because of how often I would knock it over in its old spot.
UPDATE JULY 2021
After a couple of weeks the duct tape holding the light strips beneath the stairs began to separate so I had to carefully hot glue some of the looser spots back into place. One other addition was to add three prints of Ralph McQuarrie concept art that were featured in the vintage Topps trading cards.
JANUARY 2022 UPDATE
More changes as I struggle to make this play set work in my Star Wars room. You’ll notice in the above photo that the round platform is hanging slightly over the edge of the shelf. I could have replaced the shelf with one that was deeper but at the time I wanted as much light from below to shine through the clear, plastic shelf. The light below is a USB strip stuck to the back of the tv. Over time the front of the platform began to droop over the side and it was time to make the play set as stable as possible so I took the plastic shelving out and replaced it with a wooden one. I added lighting above the display and it fills the whole display with a nice blue hue. Very cool.

I also removed the light strips from beneath both staircases. Apparently duct tape does have it’s limits so my cheap attempt at having strip lighting under the stairs had to go. I decided to add more lighting beneath the main platform and it looks great; very bright and dramatic. If I decide to shoot photos involving the staircases I can simply put a couple LED lights underneath them.
With the deeper shelf and more stable lighting, I’m NEARLY positive that I can finally live with this play set.
JUNE 2022 UPDATE
I just….I don’t know sometimes. A couple of months later the strip lights began to malfunction where they would work for maybe a half an hour and then turn off. Out of frustration I simply ignored the entire display and even considered selling it off. It was driving me crazy. But, after having numerous conversations with my buddy Brandon who kept telling me “but it looks beautiful when it IS lit up” I decided to try…to…fix…things…again. (so painful typing that).
This time I knew I needed a better solution than strip lighting. I also knew I wanted to stick with powered lights and not battery operated ones. I ended up buying HALVKLART LED cabinet spotlights from IKEA. They are small and very bright and only two of the lights lit the main platform of the carbon-freezing chamger very nicely. Although, I did keep a short LED strip underneath to fill in some of the corners of the platform. I also attached one of the IKEA lights under each staircase using a black elastic band. A small amount of tape around the light helped some of the light from bleeding away from the stairs.
I think I’ve finally done it! The entire display lights up nicely and looks great. I’m NEARLY positive that I can finally live with this play set. But I’ve said that twice before and like a wise Jedi once said, “Always in motion is the future.”
The final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi began airing on Disney Plus today and it was incredible! We’ll save the spoilers for later so for now here’s this week’s Obi-Wan Wednesday offerings from Hasbro. I’m an original trilogy era kid who saw Star Wars for the first time with my brother and aunt in the summer of 1977. I was nine and a half at the time and like so many other kids I was all in when in came to Star Wars and all the merchandise that went along with it. By the time Empire Strikes Back hit theatres in 1980 i was almost 13 years old and although I loved the movie, I wasn’t playing with toys any more and had moved on to punk rock, Maple Leafs hockey and girls. It wasn’t until the Power of the Force launch in 1995 that Star Wars toys became a part of my life again.
We had a office-style room where my Star Wars collection was first displayed. This then became a nursery in 1998 for our second child. My collection was small but still on display in my son’s nursery:
In 2001 I moved my small collection into a spare room and the rest is history. You can see how the room started out as a tv room where I was given explicit instructions by my wife and my mother in law that certain items had to remain. Things like lamps, photo albums, a couch. I dutifully nodded my head in agreement and then slowly (over a few years) I removed all of these so-called “must have.” The last thing to go was a leather recliner that wouldn’t even recline because it had to be pushed against a wall. The only non-displaying furniture in the room now is a small desk I use to podcast, run this site and work on projects.
These photos are from around 2010 to maybe 2012 and are a good example of how my collecting slowly began to grow. I wish I had photos of when I first set the room up in 2001 but I didn’t start documenting it until social media began to take off. To see my Star Wars room how it looks today, clickhere.
I’ve been taking photos of the changes I make to the Star Wars room since roughly 2012, even though the room has been full of Star Wars stuff since 2001. (I wonder what it looked like then?). It’s fun to go back and see the progress over the years. This is what the collection currently looks like and to paraphrase a certain little, green Jedi Master: “always in motion is the Star Wars room.”
The Power of the Force Jawa action figure from the 1995 Star Wars line has a cool feature where there is a “window” on top of the figures head. When light is shone into the window the Jawa’s eyes light up just like their onscreen versions. In this video we show you how to add LED lights to the figure so that they can light up instantly
I had the pleasure of joining my Canadian compatriots to the West, Generation X-Wing for a discussion on Chapter 4 of Obi-Wan Kenobi. I had a blast and it really makes me miss doing the podcast thang like I used to! Click the image above to listen!

Lots of new product announcements this week for the 4th round of “Obi-Wan Wednesdays.” LEGO, Funko Pop and plush from Mattel were all revealed today but for this site’s purposes there were five figures announced for the Hasbro Retro Collection line. We’re particularly interested in the newest droid on the block: NED-8. It’s entirely possible that this figure won’t see a Vintage Collection reveal so it could be the only chance to get this new droid in our 3.75-scaled collection.
